After the more than 1,000 km collected in Milan-Sanremo, Tirreno-Adriatico, Milan-Turin and Italian Championships, the team's "escape-man" did not miss the first opportunity to test himself in the attack. Agrigento, Valle dei Templi.

Second stage of this Giro d’Italia after the opening time trial and first breakaway. Bardiani CSF Faizanè responds present with the man from the escapes of recent months, Alessandro Tonelli.

The rider from Brescia had already highlighted himself in numerous actions in previous World Tour events such as the Milano-Sanremo and the Tirreno Adriatico, as well as in other prestigious races such as the Italian Championship and the Milano-Torino, collecting over 1,000 km of breakway in front of the group. In today’s stage, the Bardiani CSF Faizanè rider sprinted along with 4 other riders from the very first km of the race. Good rhythm and regular changes with the group behind to chase and then check their gap. Too many interests of the group with all the jerseys still in the balance to leave too much space for the fugitives of the day taken about 10km from the goal.

“From the first km we looked at each other and we understood that the breakway would start. We didn’t go away at the very first shot but it didn’t take many kilometers. I did not participate in the GPM sprint because winning it would not have been able to take the jersey anyway, so I preferred to save energy and test my legs the breakaway looking forward to other important opportunities. Today we knew we had little chance of arriving but in this Giro there will be important opportunities for the breakaways in which we will have to be. In the meantime, it was important to be there to give visibility to the team but the goal is to try even in the actions that matter “

The final climb makes a quite important selection, Filippo Fiorelli, the athlete designated for the final by the team, is forced to set foot on the ground due to a skid by the riders in front of him about halfway down the climb. So Giovanni Carboni holds the wheels of the main group, finishing 49th, 5 seconds behind Diego Ulissi, winner of the day. Tomorrow the arrival on Etna, the first important test for climbers.
